Seven Heavenly Virtues Project

The goal of this project was to create a printed tabloid with seven spreads, each spread containing imagery that represented our own interpretations of either the seven deadly sins or heavenly virtues. For this project I decided to portray the heavenly virtues because I felt it would be more challenging, as well as the fact that I related more to the virtues personally. Each spread representing a virtue had a unique set of requirements for the imagery we used or created.

The following are the guidelines for each spread:
Chastity - Analogue collage created from found printed imagery.
Temperance - Designed typographic solution.
Charity - Personal photography including a model.
Diligence - Personal photography with duotone coloration.
Patience - Photographed found object.
Kindness - Found photograph with hand lettering.
Humility - Personal photography which included the word "humility" in the photo.

This is the cover of my virtues project. Although we were not required to create our own cover images, this is original artwork by me. This is my interpretation of a biblically accurate cherub. I decided on this imagery because it represented the heavenly aspects of the virtues, while also introducing the underlying theme of nature I had throughout my project. I created this image in Adobe Photoshop and added textural photography on top to give my illustration some depth.

This is my typographical solution for representing the virtue of moderation. My design was inspired by the idea of eating only one slice or portion of food. I also drew inspiration for my color palette and overall theme from pomegranates as well. I used Adobe Illustrator to modify the typeface and add in my own designed elements that reflected my message.

This is my diligence spread, which includes my original duotone photo. I used bees as a symbol for diligence because bees are known to be one of nature's most efficient workers. The inspiration for my color palette was taken from the photo itself. I used Adobe Photoshop to enhance my photo and colorize it.

This is my double page spread for humility. I painted the humility sign by hand to mimic vintage wooden road signs. I wanted to use the idea of scale to portray a sense of humility and play on the idea of "feeling small." I also wanted there to be a sense of admiration throughout the photo because I feel that respect goes hand in hand with humility. I edited my image in Adobe Photoshop to give it a warmer feel and soft glow in order to get across the heavenly aspect of virtues.

Here is a full flipsnack of my final project, which includes all my spreads and both my front and back covers.
